It is rare, however, for weather to become severe enough to interfere with outdoor plans. Occasionally the trade winds shut down and it can become hot and humid. Even on the moist windward side, showers occur most frequently during evening hours. Showers occur almost daily on the windward side, while on the leeward said, showers are light. The Koolau Mountains extend along the northeastern side and to the west lies the Waianae Mountains. Oahu has two mountain ranges that separate the wet "windward" side from the drier "leeward" coast. The trade winds are consistent in summer months, and in combination with the warm temperatures gives Oahu and all of Hawaii great conditions for sailing, boating and other outdoor recreational activities. The north shore of Oahu has a subtropical climate with prevailing northeasterly trade winds, which are a dominant factor that governs Oahu's pleasant climate. An open-air restaurant is at the end of the trail. Here a trail winds through two acres of tropical gardens, lush foliage and a bamboo groove. Another point of interest in the Kaaawa Valley is the Ha'iku Gardens which lie at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains. This long, narrow beach is bordered by grassy areas and with the grand Ko'olau Mountains in the background, makes a great place along your North Shore tour to sit back and enjoy a picnic lunch. Opposite the Kualoa Ranch is Kualoa Regional Park. This 4,000-acre ranch also offers helicopter rides, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, mountain biking and more. Kaaawa is also just one mile from Kualoa Ranch, which is a horse ranch that offers 40 minute or 1.5 hour trail rides into the Kaaawa Valley.

Snorkeling and diving are also available in the area, and the sandbars at nearby Kaneohe Beach Park make a very nice spot for easy swimming. This area of Oahu has been described as being "where the Ko'olau Mountains meet the sea." Kaaawa, being on the "windward" side of the island, has some of the best surfing on the islands. Kaaawa is located on the north shore of Oahu, near Kahana Bay and Kaoio Point.
